Classic 1976 album from Nigerian afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, railing against his native government and it’s military, and as a result, it is thought to have resulted in the murder of Kuti’s motherFunmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and the destruction of his commune.

The album’s popularity infuriated the government, who launched a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic (the commune that Fela had established in Nigeria), during which 1000 soldiers attacked the commune. Kuti was severely beaten, and his elderly mother was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries. The Kalakuta Republic was burned, and Fela’s studio, instruments, and master tapes were destroyed. Kuti claimed that he would have been killed if it were not for the intervention of a commanding officer as he was being beaten.
